Oven Maintenance Tips to Prevent Repair

Although the oven is one of the most commonly used appliances in the home alongside the washing machine, it is often neglected when it comes to its maintenance, which can result in needed repairs. Repairs are ultimately preventable, making it important to follow basic maintenance tips to prolong the lifespan of the appliances in the home, whether it involves the washer or the oven.

Replace the GasketAlthough the gasket is often a foreign object for most people who spend time in the kitchen, it can wreck havoc on the appliance if it begins to have issues. Replace the gasket any time there appears to be moisture on the exterior of the oven. This will ensure that the temperature continues to be controlled for the oven.

Clean and Change the Exhaust Filters

The exhaust filter works to clean the air when it becomes too smokey due to cooking, but can also become clogged with grease and grime. The filter should be cleaned every two months with a mix of baking soda and water. The filter should also be replaced when necessary.

Self-Clean the Oven

Unlike the washer or other appliances, most ovens have a convenient self-cleaning feature that is available for a simple process that involves heating the interior to melt away burned food or spills. Extremely high temperatures of 900 degrees Fahrenheit are reached to remove excess dirt over a span of three hours to ensure that the appliance continues to run efficiently, which is similar to the process of the washing machine.

This should be performed every few months to keep energy costs low and to prevent damage to interior parts. Performing this task will prevent having to replace the sheet metal or consult with oven or washing machine appliance repair service.

Avoid Lining the Bottom with Foil

An old fashioned trick that many people use to keep their oven clean is to use a strip of foil to catch food particles that can easily fall when baking. Although this is an effective way of making the cleaning process easier, it can lead to fires or damage to the oven if the foil gets too close to the cooking element. Instead, wipe up any spills along the way to prevent having to get an appliance service.

Maintain Oven Seals

Many people use an excess of energy when it comes to their washer or oven. A common way to waste energy is by neglecting oven seals that are worn or damaged, which can allow heat to escape. Maintain the oven seals by replacing them or resealing the material to ensure that heat does not escape.
